How Karwa Chauth Is Celebrated

Karwa Chauth falls on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, by the Purnimanta calendar followed in north India. It is most widely kept in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh.

By tradition, the day starts before sunrise with sargi, a meal often given by the mother-in-law. Women then keep a fast, usually without food or water, dress up in bridal wear and apply mehendi. In the evening they gather for the Karwa Chauth katha and puja with a karwa (clay pot) and a decorated thali.

The fast ends at moonrise. Women look at the moon through a chalni (sieve), then at their husband, offer water to the moon and take the first sip of water and bite of food from his hands. Many husbands now fast alongside their wives.
